How do I train my boyfriend to tidy up after himself?
Q. How do I train my boyfriend to tidy up after himself? The toilet seat is always up, there’s always one or two dishes in the sink, and the socks… I’m getting fed up. What do I do?
A. If you want your man to tidy up after himself, you need to ask him to.Ask him, don’t nag him! Then, catch him doing what you want him to and appreciate him for it. Tell him how grateful you are that he’s putting his socks are in the dirty clothes hamper. Tell him how much you enjoy walking into a clean kitchen!
Before you get entirely fed up, ask him what he suggests as a solution to this issue. Maybe you can agree to always put the toilet seat and the lid down. He probably doesn’t like having to pick up the seat after you! Of course, he has never experienced the horror of falling in!!!
It’s always important to analyze what’s most important to you in a relationship. Determine whether this issue is what I call “a hill to die on.” If it isn’t, resolve that he’s so wonderful in all the important ways that you don’t mind picking up a few socks! If you can’t live with a bit of a slob and he can’t be rehabilitated, you might need to look elsewhere for someone more suitable. My opinion is that if this is all you have to complain about, you’re lucky!
BOTTOM LINE:
- Communicate your wishes, compromise on a solution, and appreciate what he does.
- Decide if this is “a hill to die on.”
- Be grateful for all that he is and look before you sit down!
